Welding training programs can take from a couple of months to a full year. The schooling is tough, very hands-on, and there is a risk for injury if proper safety measures are not followed.
Welding training programs do not discriminate in terms of gender or race, but it is important to note that those with disabilities need to seriously sit down and contemplate welding as a career. In general, handicapped people make excellent welders providing the workspace can accommodate wheelchairs, walkers, and other necessary equipment. Welding training programs do not bring this up to be discriminatory, but there are a number of deaths and injuries that occur every year because welding equipment fell and the welder was unable to move fast enough to grab the equipment before it set a potentially deadly fire.
Welding training programs are held throughout the United States. People find that welding training is a program that costs much less than a typical two or four-year college program, but salary scales for those holding welding certification can be as high or higher than someone with a general degree. In addition, job security in welding is pretty high right now as there are always oil rigs, wells, bridge supports, and buildings needing repairs or being constructed. These are all important welding jobs.
Welding training programs do have a few requirements that must regarded closely. Any student in a welding training program must never wear polyester clothing; the risk of it catching fire from the intense heat is too dangerous. In addition, OSHA approved steel-toed boots are mandatory, and safety glasses with shields or safety goggles are also required in any welding training program.
