In many states, including California, the finish carpentry license exam is broken into six sections. The first section of the finish carpentry license exam covers creating the plans for the work to be completed, pricing materials, and viewing the site to ensure the plans match the home’s atmosphere and desired look, as well as to make sure the sizes will work and that there are no safety hazards that need taking care of before finish work can begin.
The second portion involves building cabinetry and countertops. This involves measuring the materials, building the units, and then putting on the varnish or paint. The third step in a finish carpentry license exam involves installing these cabinets or countertops. The exam covers removing old units, if applicable, and installing all cabinetry and hardware.
The finish carpentry license exam then moves on to installing windows, doors, and trim and then varnishing or painting all of these items. Typically, the flooring is the last item that is installed because this prevents the flooring from becoming stained during the painting process. Finally, the finish carpentry license exam covers safety practices and accident prevention. This is one of the most important parts of the finish carpentry license exam and usually counts for the largest portion of the final grade.
